How many facets?
-
The standard number of facets of a Heart Shape Cut Diamond is generally 59. It
is a brilliant cut, which can be modified so that the number of pavilion mains
may be 6, 7 or 8.
What does it look like?
-
The Heart Shaped Brilliant bears some similarity to the Pear Shape, except that
there is a cleft at the top. In fact, often the reason cutters may choose a
Heart shape over a Pear may be that the Rough Diamond contained an inclusion
located in the cleft. The skill of the cutter can make a great difference in
the beauty of this cut.
-
Generally, a Heart Shape's length to width ratio is approximately 0.9 to 1.2:1.
What works best for Heart Cut?
-
Generally, look for a balanced make, avoiding extremes.
-
Hearts must be extremely well cut, which makes them more expensive because
excellent proportions result from a greater expenditure of rough diamond.
-
Most Heart Shape Diamonds are purchased as single gems. Solitaire rings are set
with hearts throughout the range of sizes. After necklaces and rings, most are
sold as matched pairs for stud earrings. The primary market for Hearts is for
luxury jewellery. There is heavy interest in the Heart Cut Diamonds in the Far
East.
Hard to find due to low demand, some people prefer a heart shape diamond for
sentimental purposes. The heart is the ultimate symbol of love and since most
heart-shaped diamonds are nearly round, each has the advantage of having a
nearly round pavilion that provides its beautiful brilliance. When choosing a
colour grade, consider that while the price of a lower fancy-shaped diamond is
exceptional, colour may be slightly visible in its corners.
