How many facets?
-
The standard number of facets of a Marquise Cut gemstone is 58, an adaptation
of the standard brilliant (33 crown, 25 pavilion). However, the pavilion can be
cut with 4, 6 or 8 pavilion main facets.
What are the origins of the Marquise Cut?
-
The Marquise Cut was inspired by the fetching smile of the Marquise de
Pompadour and commissioned by the Sun King, France's Louis XIV, who wanted a
Diamond to match the smile.
-
The Marquise was one of the most popular shapes in the 1960's to 1980's and
like the Emerald is a traditional shape. This is probably the fourth most
popular shape behind the Round, Princess and Oval.
What does it look like?
-
The Marquise Cut is also known as the "Navette" shape and looks like a long
oval that has been stretched out to a point at each end (e.g. rugby ball viewed
straight down from the top).
-
The optimal ratio of length to width is 2:1, although a length-to-width ratio
between 1.75 and 2.25:1 is perfectly acceptable.
What works best for Marquise Cut?
-
It is important that the Marquise Cut gem not be too shallow or light will pass
through the back of the diamond and its brilliance and colour will be
diminished.
-
Marquise provides good brilliance and colour.
-
It is gorgeous when used as a solitaire or when enhanced by smaller gems.
The shape of a marquise diamond can maximize carat weight, giving you a much
larger-looking diamond. This fancy-shaped brilliant-cut diamond looks beautiful
set with round or pear-shaped side stones, and the length of the marquise makes
fingers appear long and slender. When choosing a colour grade, consider that
while the price of a lower colour marquise diamond is exceptional, colour may
be slightly visible in its corners.
