Hatton
Garden is a street and area near Holborn in London. It derives its name from
the garden of the bishops of Ely, which was given to Sir Christopher Hatton by
Queen Elizabeth I in 1581.
Trade in the old City of London developed around certain streets and quarters
often dedicated to specific types of business. Since Medieval times Hatton
Garden has been at the heart of the London’s jewellery trade. With over 1000 of
the UK’s finest jewellers, craftspeople and designers and generations of
expertise, Hatton Garden remains at the heart of London’s jewellery trade.
There are more diamonds in Hatton Garden than anywhere else in the UK.
Michael Flanders and Donald Swann (humorists of the 1960s and 1970s, the former,
bluff, wheelchair-bound and bearded, the latter an evangelical Christian
pianist) celebrated its connection with the jewellery trade in their song of a
sewage worker, "Down Below":-
Hatton Garden is the spot, down below
Where we likes to go a lot, down below
Since a bloke from Leather Lane
Dropped a diamond down the drain!
