When thinking of diamonds, the white coloured stone with indescribable beauty is something that usually comes to the minds of people. However, not every diamond has the same colour. Many of the famous diamonds in the world come in a wide range of shades and vibrant colours. The Hope Diamond, one of the world’s most famous diamonds comes in a blue colour. Although very beautiful, for a long time it had a reputation of bringing bad luck to its owners.
During the French Revolution, this diamond was stolen from King Louis XIV. In 1830, when it resurfaced, a gentleman named Henry Philip Hope purchased it and this diamond was then named after him. Another well known diamond is The Tiffany, which is yellow in colour. In 1878, this diamond was found in the DeBeers owned mines. This yellow stone was bought by Charles Lewis Tiffany and after the stone was cut, it weighed above 128 carats. The Grand Conde is another famous diamond. It is light pink in colour having a pear shape. It is believed that this diamond was purchased by Louis XIII and he later gave it to Louis De Bourbon, the Prince of Conde. He was a Commander in the French Army during the thirty Years War. The Grand Conde Diamond weighs around 9 carats.
Another famous diamond is the Great Chrysanthemum Diamond which weighs around 104 carats and is orange-brown in colour. It was found in South Africa and had a pear shaped modified cut. It was then sold to a jeweller named Julius Cohen. Green, Purple, Red and Blue coloured diamonds are the rarest ones whereas brown and yellow tinted diamonds are the most common ones.
