The shape of the ‘cut’ is a matter of personal choice, taste or preference. However, it must be mentioned that the quality of execution by the cutter to impart a desired shape is of paramount importance. Also, the shape of your diamond cut is largely reliant on the original shape of rough stone.
The shape of the ‘cut’ is a matter of personal choice, taste or preference. However, it must be mentioned that the quality of execution by the cutter to impart a desired shape is of paramount importance. Also, the shape of your diamond cut is largely reliant on the original shape of rough stone. The round brilliant cut is usually preferred when the crystal you go for is an octahedron, since two stones could well be cut from one crystal. Asymmetrical raw crystals are generally cut in a ‘fancy’ style.
Several basic diamond shapes are as follows:
• Radiant
• Round
• Emerald
• Heart
• Oval
• Marquise
• Pear
• Princess
• Trillion
Originally, the ‘round brilliant’ cut was introduced in the middle of the 17th century. The first brilliants were called as Mazarins. They had just 17 facets on the crown. The 58 facet modern round brilliant was conceived in the early 1900's.
There are several facets, such as diamond geometry, accent stones, etc. that need to be taken into consideration before finalising the shape of a diamond. This is the key to making a beautiful piece of diamond jewellery, including engagement rings, dangles in earrings and custom design diamond jewellery.
